Cannabis Simple Syrup

A water-based sweet base for drinks, cocktails and drizzles. Needs lecithin to hold the dose.

About this recipe

Cannabis simple syrup is plain sugar syrup that carries a measured dose of THC, so you can sweeten coffee, iced tea, lemonade or a mocktail and know how much you are taking.

Cannabinoids do not dissolve in water, so you cannot steep flower in syrup. You start from something that already holds the THC, a cannabis tincture or an infused MCT oil, and bind it into the syrup with sunflower lecithin. The lecithin keeps the oil spread evenly, so every spoon carries the same dose.

Making it with MCT oil: use the cannabis MCT oil recipe on this site, whisk the lecithin into the warm syrup first, then add the oil slowly while blending for a full minute. Shake the bottle before each use, because a little separation is normal.

  2. Whisk in the lecithin until smooth.
  3. Stir in the tincture or infused oil and blend well to emulsify.
  4. Bottle and shake before each use; dose by the teaspoon.

Questions

Can I make simple syrup with MCT cannabis oil?

Yes. Infused MCT oil works well because it stays liquid. Blend it into warm syrup with sunflower lecithin so it does not float on top, and shake the bottle before every use.

Why do I need lecithin?

THC binds to fat, not to water. Without an emulsifier the oil separates and most of the dose ends up in the first or the last spoon. Lecithin keeps it evenly mixed.

How long does cannabis simple syrup keep?

About two to four weeks in a clean, closed bottle in the fridge. Label it clearly with the dose and keep it away from children and from anyone who does not expect it.

How strong is it?

With the amounts in this recipe one serving holds about 41 mg THC, which is a lot for most people. Use it by the teaspoon, start with 2.5 to 5 mg if you are new, and wait at least two hours before taking more.
