Decarboxylation Explained: The Step That Makes Edibles Work

If your edibles ever came out weak, decarboxylation is usually the reason. It is the one step beginners skip — and the one that makes or breaks every infusion.

What decarboxylation actually is

Fresh cannabis contains THCA, an acidic form of THC that is not intoxicating. Applying gentle heat over time removes a carboxyl group and converts THCA into active THC. Smoking does this instantly with a flame; for edibles you have to do it deliberately in the oven first.

The standard method: spread ground flower on a lined tray and bake at about 110°C (230°F) for 30–45 minutes, until lightly golden and fragrant. Low and slow protects the cannabinoids and terpenes.

Why temperature matters

Too hot and you burn off both THC and the aromatic terpenes that give each strain its character. Too cool and the conversion never finishes. A low oven is the sweet spot — you are toasting, not roasting.

Then infuse

Once decarbed, the flower is ready to steep into a fat. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, so butter, oil, or a tincture carries them into your food. See our classic cannabutter and infused olive oil for the two base infusions everything else builds on.

Decarbing is smelly. Use a well-ventilated kitchen, and keep infused food clearly labelled and away from children and pets.
